Letter From The Publisher

Print and Web

Since 1997, Illumination, the University of Missouri's award-winning magazine of research, scholarship and creative achievement, has provided no-cost print subscriptions by request to friends of Mizzou, both here in Missouri and throughout the nation.

Our goal in this has been straightforward: to explore with you the thrilling quest for scientific and scholarly knowledge at Missouri's flagship public university. In this I believe we have succeeded, at least judging from the hundreds of wonderfully supportive cards and letters we've received from readers over the years.

Today the University is faced with extraordinary financial challenges, a difficult situation MU shares with thousands of individuals, businesses and government agencies across the nation. In order to ensure that MU's core mission -- serving the research, education and public service needs of all Missourians -- remains robust, the University has had to adopt a number of painful but necessary cost-saving measures. Among these, I am sad to report, is that this Spring 2009 edition of Illumination has been published only in digital form.

Illumination will resume biannual print publication in the fall. In the meantime, I thank you for joining us here online, where you'll encounter a range of MU's most creative, cutting-edge science and scholarship. While at our Website I also hope you will also take the time to peruse the full range of past Illumination content via our searchable database. You'll find informative features and multimedia presentations that are sure to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the faculty achievements detailed in our past editions.

Finally, I want to thank you for your continued support of research and scholarship at the University of Missouri. I hope you will feel free to share with me any comments and concerns.
